Potty-training.
A question to you moms out there-how did you do it? I had a co-worker who had success with the potty-training boot camp. Letting your kid bare-bottom it for about three days or so. He swears that his kid was potty-trained in a weekend. But here's the problem. You have to wake your kid up an hour after they went to bed, so they can use the potty. If I wake up Sutton after he's gone to sleep, he's up for the rest of the night. Which means that I am up for the rest of the night. Not the best solution for me. So, I mentioned using Pull-Ups. Which my co-worker informed me, negates everything you're teaching your child.
So, what do I do? He can now tell me, "I make poopie." Which, sure enough, he pooped his diaper. Then he lets me take him into his room, he lays down on the floor, and I change his diaper. He watches us use the toilet (I know, awkward) and he says "Mama go pee-pee." Or "Daddy go potty." So, he knows what it is. But anytime we try to pull down his pants, or get him to sit on the little potty, he FREAKS out. Crying, and trying to pull his pants back up.
How do I get him to get over this fear?
I wanted to show some pictures of Sutton's bathroom. It turned out so cute! We went with a Dr. Seuss theme, to coincide with his room.

We got the larger one with his name on it! Cute, huh?The next picture is my favorite. I found these amazing little paintings on Etsy. The shop is named "Meandmypaintbrush" and she makes Dr. Seuss themed paintings for the bathroom!
If you can't see it very well, they say "Wash Face" "Comb Hair" "Brush Teeth" and "Wash Hands." They are so cute, and really make the bathroom complete!!

ReplyDeleteWe just waited for him to be ready to do it. he was a little over 3, but one day, he used the potty, and he has only had 2 accidents since then. he is dry overnight, too, but he still sleeps with a Pull Up on because I would rather not deal with changing the sheets if he does have an accident. He wakes up when he needs to pee, pees, and goes back to sleep-- the pull up is just for (my) peace of mind.
We watched Elmo's Potty Time a lot, and we have about 10 books on using the potty that we started working into his bedtime reading, and we talked about using the potty and pointed out his friends who used the potty and bought super awesome character undies. And one day, he just did it. We weren't in a big hurry, though, because I HATE public restroom, and jack was a teeny baby, so I had to drag him in there, too.
We're doing it the same way with jack, and he pees in the potty quite a bit, but he has yet to poop there.
I actually am pro-Pull Ups, but I understand why some people aren't.

I agree Sarah. Pull-ups are only "diapers" to the kids if we allow them to be. I would tell Sutton that these are big boy pants and when the accidents happen (trust me) you'll be SO much happier that it was in a pull-up. When the time comes, you can go shopping with him for the "special" big boy pants i.e. regular underwear. We really liked Elmo's Potty Time DVD and if he has a special toy or teddy it helps to put them on the potty for a couple days before you attempt to put Sutton on. Books are great too. There's one called Potty Time where you press the button for the sound of the toilet flush. I tried the bootcamp style and I pulled my hair out. It just takes patience. Good luck!

I definitely wouldn't force the issue if he doesn't want to do it. The mantra that I used with all my kids was "they won't go to kindergarten in diapers..." by which I mean, they will be ready when they're ready. Sounds like you're doing all the right stuff to get him to see how wonderful using the potty is! And I put all my kids in nighttime pullups until they were ready for nighttime training (takes way longer I found with the boys) and I didn't feel that it negated anything at all. Instead, it prevented embarrassing and annoying accidents. Made nighttime feel as successful as daytime.

Oh, PS I used M&M's with all my kids too. Use the potty, get an m&m. A total hit. Until the 3rd one, she decided that she should get m's when her big brother went potty too. And then he thought he should get them when SHE went potty. Oh well, a few extra m's never hurt them either :-)
